This 1952/3 Raleigh is a three-speed with a Sturmey-Archer AW hub, and it is equipped with front Dynohub, lights, and gearcase. It also has a Cambridge (Mass.) Licence Plate ! The AW hub on this bicycle is an example of the most common, most reliable and successful gearing system produced by Sturmey-Archer England. AW hub manufacture began in 1937 and with minor modifications is still being produced today. There was a short period from 1955-1958 when the AW was discontinued due to the production of the SW hub as an eventual AW replacement (see the 1956 Raleigh Sports). The SW hub proved unreliable, however, and soon the AW hubs returned.
