This 1956 Raleigh is a
three-speed with a Sturmey-Archer SW hub. It is equipped with
front Dynohub, lights, Brooks B66 saddle and gearca
se. This bicycle also has an unusual trigger shifter that can only be used with three speed hubs. In 1954 Sturmey
Archer began production of the SW hub as a replacement for the
old-reliable AW hub. The SW was smaller
and
lighter than the AW. In addition, the SW was equipped with unsprung
crescent-shaped pawls which made the hub almost silent. However, the SW
hub proved to be unreliable and was eventually replaced by the
re-introduction of the AW hub in 1958. The SW
hub was discontinued around
1960.
